MECN2024: Engineering Thermodynamics - University of the Witwatersrand
1. Background
In the field of psychology, multiple studies have been conducted on the practices of effective learning. A great deal of these studies suggests that teaching educational material enhances the learning of that material. This is known as the teaching- by-learning strategy. The purpose of this assignment is to test your understanding of thermodynamic concepts and your ability to explain it to others. This assignment will also help you to practice research and scholarly communication of an academic concept. The purpose of this assignment is three-fold, namely to ensure that students:
a. Understand fundamental thermodynamic concepts and how it applies to industry.
b. Are able to communicate thermodynamic concepts in a clear and engaging manner to an audience unaware of these concepts.
c. Are able to transfer their knowledge of thermodynamic concepts to software applications used by professional engineers in industry.
d. Are capable of successfully working in groups with their peers.
Task
Prepare a poster on the compressibility of a gas and how it relates to the ideal gas law.
In your poster, clearly explain the concept using visual aids as if explaining to someone who has never heard of the concept before. Visual aids could include animated pictures, real-world photos, experimental setups for demonstration or any other type of illustrative expression. Be creative and have fun with it!
Solve the problem given in section 10 using MATLAB. You are encouraged to use the skills that you have acquired in MECN2012 (Computing Skills and Software Development) to find the solution. Clearly describe the steps taken in order to find the final solution. While solving the problem, state how gas compressibility is relevant. The MATLAB code will not be marked, but rather the reasoning behind your solution.
