Assignment Scenario
The need of having important and meaningful information is the key driver for successful decision making by the management of an organization. Business Intelligence is a technology driven process which transforms data into actionable insights in an organization with the use of technologies such as decision support systems to include tools and methods associated with data mining, data integration, data quality and data warehousing. BI tools analyse data and present analytical findings to provide organizational heads with detailed intelligence about the state of a business.
Assume yourself as a Business Analyst recruited to an organization (selected organization) in a project to implement a new BI tool and you are required to complete the following tasks.
The proposed BI tool should be able to provide required information for management decision making and to handle daily operations efficiently and effectively.
Part 01
Prepare a report including the following tasks,
-Discuss the background details of the organization. Identify and explain different business processes and supporting processes models used at the selected organization with examples.
-Discuss the application software used in the given process models. Evaluate the benefits and drawbacks of using application software as a mechanism for business processing.
-Justify with specific examples of the key features of business intelligence functionality.
-Compare and contrast a range of information systems and technologies that can be used to support organizations at operational, tactical and strategic levels.
-Discuss on business intelligence tools and techniques and functionalities associated with them using specific examples chosen from the selected organization processing.
-Discuss how business intelligence tools can contribute to effective decision making.
- Describe the legal issues involved in the secure exploitation of business intelligence tools in an organization. What are the legal issues you can identify in the system designed by you for the selected organization?
-Evaluate how organizations could use business intelligence to extend their target audience and make them more competitive within the market, taking security legislation into consideration.
Part 02 Produce a comprehensive table of comparison that includes the below details,
-Differentiation between structured, semi structured and unstructured data based on the selected organization.
- What are the different management levels available in the organization? Compare the types of support available for Business Decision making at those levels of the organizational structure.
Part 03
Present the findings of the following tasks to the board of Directors of the selected organization,
-Design a simple business intelligence tool with user friendly and functional interfaces that can perform a specific task to support problem solving or decision making at an advanced level of the selected organization.
-Conduct a research and identify new Business Intelligence trends and technologies used in other organizations that can be used to further enhance the operational activities in the selected organization.
-Critically review the design in terms of how it meets a specific user or business requirement and identify what customization has been integrated into the design.
Required: Complete a project logbook to record relevant project tasks according to time frames. Complete weekly logbook evaluation form to get the supervisor's feedback. Completed ‘Gantt Chart'. Attach all these documents as evidence in your report.
Performance Review
You will need to reflect on the success of your project and your own performance in a personal performance review at the end of the project. This is a written reflection of 500 words (You will not be penalised if they exceed this word limit).
What was the project supposed to accomplish?
Did the project succeed in its aims? How do you know? Specifically, outline any evaluation and assessment undertaken.
What things do you think worked well and why? Evaluate all aspects of the project (e.g. initial inception, project activities and project outcomes) from a range of perspectives.
What problems emerged during the project and how were they tackled? Was there timely identification of issues and resolution during the project process?
What did you learn from undertaking the project?
How would you rate your performance as project manager?
What strengths and weaknesses of your performance did you identify?
How will this inform and support your continuous professional development?
