The aim of the written assignment is to develop essential research and communication skills that you will need during your university studies (and in the workplace). In particular we want you to:

• learn how to use library resources to search for relevant scientific information from a variety of sources including journal articles
• synthesize information from a number of sources
• reference information correctly
• organise information well, presenting it in a logical manner with subheadings
• demonstrate the ability to use scientific writing style with short, clearly written sentences and correct technical terminology avoiding colloquial expressions
• demonstrate proper use of English grammar and correct spelling (use the Spell Checker facility on your computer!)

It is essential that your assignment is all your own work; the use of copied source material or using an article that has been written by another person is academic misconduct and will be treated very seriously and heavily penalized (see University plagiarism policy).

Word Length: 1500 words (+/-10%)

Manipulating the microflora of the gut

Most animals have a very diverse assemblage of microorganisms in their digestive systems. It has long been recognised that these are essential for proper digestion and growth in herbivores, and more recently the human gut microflora has been associated with a wide range of aspects of health and disease. There is considerable interest in manipulating the composition and activity of these microbial communities to achieve better health or other outcomes. For your assignment, you will choose one of the following:

1. Treating allergies/autoimmune diseases in humans by manipulating the microflora of the gut
2. Reducing methane production in ruminants (cattle, sheep) by manipulating the microflora of the gut

Your article should cover the following points:

• Where in the digestive system the microbes are located
• The main types of microbes present
• How the microbes are acquired
• What their normal roles are
• A brief outline of the problem (allergy, methane) and its link to gut flora
• What changes to the microflora would be required
• How this might be done
• What practical problems there are in achieving this
• The prospects for successful application of microflora manipulation

You are welcome to view these in the original form using the links above but I have combined/simplified them below with additional comments in red to clarify where the Wikipedia instructions may conflict with UNE assignment format.

1. your article should be-

a. well-written: the prose is clear and concise, and the spelling and grammar are correct; check out the words to watch this contains some very good advice

b. comprehensive: it addresses the main aspects of the topic; neglects no major facts or details and places the subject in context; it stays focused on the topic without going into unnecessary detail.

c. well-researched: it is a thorough and representative survey of the relevant literature. Claims are verifiable against high-quality reliable sources and are supported by inline citations where appropriate; (as this is a UNE assignment please use APA reference/citation formating)

d. neutral: it presents views fairly and without bias; and

e. stable: it is not subject to ongoing edit wars and its content does not change significantly from day to day, except in response to the featured article process.(don't worry about this criterion but note that your article should avoid material that is highly contentious and likely to change)

2. It follows the style guidelines (these are very complex; I do not expect you to read but check out the format of good Wikipedia articles and use the summary below), including the provision of-

a. a lead: a concise lead section that summarizes the topic and prepares the reader for the detail in the subsequent sections;

b. appropriate structure: a system of hierarchical section headings and a substantial but not overwhelming table of contents; and

c. consistent citations: (as this is a UNE assignment please use APA reference/citation formating)

3. Media. It has images and other media, where appropriate, with succinct captions, and acceptable copyright status (don't worry about this but you must include the correct citation).

4. Length. It stays focused on the main topic without going into unnecessary detail. (please stick to word length of 1500 words +/- 10%)
