I believe privacy is the withholding of information you do not want to make public or have people know about. In regards to public health it means that the patient is the person making decision on who knows the reason for their doctor visit, their own diagnosis, or anything talked about with any healthcare professional. I believe that privacy is a moral right because it is something that is for the patient to decide who will gets to know their information. The patient is coming to the Hospital for a service and that service is for a diagnosis, or because they are seeking treatment. This means that it is of no business of anyone working in the healthcare field to divulge information pertaining to the patient. In no part of our lives do we want people to talk about information that pertains to us, and this is true when it comes to information that regards our health. When it comes to AIDS/HIV this can cause different opinions of people if this information becomes public.

When considering weather it is every justifiable to violate someones right to privacy I would have to say that no, it is never justified. The reason for this is because there is an agreement, even though it might not be said, when you go to the hospital that whatever is said there is between you and the physician or healthcare worker. If you begin to allow this information to be used against the person you will lose the trust of the patients. This also covers not only the patients but the healthcare workers, as is seen in a case in our medical ethics book. In the case of David Acer, a dentist, he treated all his patients knowing he was HIV postive and infected all seven of them. They all felt betrayed and Kimberly Bergalis testified in court arguing that all healthcare professionals who are HIV postive would be legally prohibited from interacting with patients (Pence 351). Although this case was horrible and the dentist should never knowingly have been spreading HIV, it still does not mean that our medical records should be made public.
