Upon completion of this assessment, students should be able to demonstrate:

• Knowledge of common and medical anatomical terminology and ability to use medical terminology appropriately in context of providing specific health care services:

• Knowledge of normal structure and physiology of body systems, and the ability to explain relevant aspects of the structure and function of body systems in reference to specific health care services to be provided

• Knowledge of causes of disease, and ability to explain common problems associates with various body systems.

• Knowledge of various body processes, including metabolism, body temperature regulation, biological maturation and aging

• Ability to explain the potential impacts of a range of factors (internal - eg. mental or emotional; and external - eg. specific interventions) in relation to identified body systems

This case study is to be completed in three parts - due dates are clearly indicated in your student study guide - you will receive your marked paper back with very clear feedback on how you went. You should use the feedback from the first stage to guide you in completing the second and third stages.

It is expected that by the time you submit Part 1B, you will understand how to (a) use the sources of information to help you write your answers; (b) correctly reference your answers, both in-text and in the Reference List at the end and (c) put your answers into your own words, not cut and paste them from the Internet.

Question 1 - Cardiovascular System (100 -150 words)

When a patient has ischaemic heart disease, explain the pathophysiological changes that occur in the coronary artery walls as a result of this condition. Include the role of macrophages in your answer.

List four modifiable risk factors of coronary artery disease and explain how each of these factors contribute to the development of plaque.

Question 3 - Cardiovascular System (50-75 words)

Describe six signs and symptoms that may occur due to acute myocardial ischaemia or infarction. Describe the physiological reasons why these signs or symptoms occur.

Question 4 - Cardiovascular System

Mr Jones is admitted to medical ward with a 4 day history of intermittent chest pain. He has a past history of type two diabetes and hypertension. He is waiting for a stress test that has been booked for 1600. At 1300 he pushes the buzzer and states that he has chest pain; you note that he is diaphoretic and short of breath (respiratory rate 24).

Review the NSW rural emergency clinical guidelines for adults acute coronary syndrome guideline and appendix 4 chest pain pathway (link is in Assessment Details handout) to answer the following questions in relation to the pain:

A. Who should be informed about Mr Jones' change of condition? (25 words)

B. List the questions you would ask to evaluate his pain. (50 words)

C. Explain the assessments that would be completed in the first 15 minutes of his care (150-200 words)

D. Which of the tasks listed in part C would be completed by radiology and pathology staff? (25 words)

Mr Jones is diagnosed with angina and treated with medication. During his hospital assessment, he is found to have a high cholesterol and triglyceride level. His body mass index is 32.4. He is referred to the cardiac rehab team in preparation for discharge.

E. List the health professionals that are involved in a cardiac rehabilitation team. Select three health professionals and provide specific examples of the service they would provide to Mr Jones during his rehabilitation. (150 - 200 words)
