A shift register is a circuit which uses flip-flops connected in line so that each bit which is stored at the Q output is shifted to the next flip-flop in line at each clock pulse. Shift registers from a very important class of components in all types of digital circuits because the flip-flop output is changed only by a clock pulse after the input has been changed, the removal of clock pulses, leaving only the supply voltage present leaves the output of the flip-flop unchanged for as long as these conditions are maintained.
