Level of oxygen from hyperventilation

After hyperventilating for about 30 seconds, the results for my study show that breathing frequency increases. I thought it would decrease because you do not want to breath out C02 as there is less C02 in the body. Is the breathing frequency increased so you can decrease the level of oxygen from hyperventilation?
