Assignment - Investigating a Sustainable Plan for a Large-Scale Event
The purpose of this assignment is to investigate a large-scale event and see how involved the planners can be in pursuing sustainability. You will need to review an event's website for as much detail as possible (ideally there will be an annual sustainability report associated with the event), as well as find another source (magazine, newspaper, etc.) that explains the efforts of the event planners.
The event chosen is Shambhala Festival in Salmo, B.C, Canada. From there, look at the official website and search for sustainability information (this is often part of their mission). If you cannot find a sustainability statement, find another event that does have one.
Select an event that you've attended or wish to attend someday - you can pick something domestic or international!
Provide some background on the event: name and type of event, when it happens and how often, location, number of attendees (and trend over time), history of the event. Review their mission for sustainability. This will be on their website or in a report posted on their website or available through the host organization. What is their sustainability mission? How many people are on the sustainability "planning committee"?
You may need to search around for a festival/conference where this information is apparent. Is there a sustainability report that presents impacts of the event? If so, read it and summarize successes and consider ways to improve. Itemize what they promote that relates to sustainability (remember to look for environment, social/cultural and economic benefits!) and explain their criteria for success.
Energy Transportation Water use Resources (stuff at the event) Community (getting locals involved, partnerships with charities, etc?) Other? Has the event earned any "sustainability certifications"? If so, which ones? Critique what you think their overall contribution to sustainable event planning. Are there areas where they can improve? Do you have suggestions on what they could potentially do better? What are the challenges that this particular event faces (I.e. event location, cost of transport, etc.).
Critique in all areas of sustainability and provide examples. Include in your report at least 2 references: one can be the conference website, the other should be a reputable newspaper and/or report that presents event statistics. You may also use a research paper that explains the event from a case study standpoint. Evaluation Quality of content: Did you present key concepts and effectively convey central ideas and themes?
Synthesis of knowledge: Did you demonstrate an understanding of the questions raised? Were you able to provide an in-depth analysis, supported by examples? Presentation of material: Did you present a logical sequence of arguments/ideas.
