Assignment:
What I'm asking for is help with a project. AIR QUALITY POLLUTION MANAGEMENT
Established city: Lahore, Pakistan
Instructions
For the following project, take the place of a Ministry of the Environment delegate in charge of assessing the air quality of a chosen city.
Research the air quality of the city, identifying sources of emissions of primary pollutants (NOx, SOx, VOCs, PM2.5, PM10) and secondary pollutants (tropospheric ozone and smog). Focus on data with cited sources, facts, and statistics. Create graphs to summarize the gathered data. Investigate if the geographical conditions of the city impact emission concentrations (e.g., thermal inversion).
Perform research on the pollution management strategies that the government/municipality is applying in the city to manage air quality. If there are no strategies, look for an editorial or official website to verify and prove this point.
Develop a Pollution Management Model that includes three categories of pollution management:
- Altering human activities that lead to pollution
- Controlling the sources of emissions (e.g., controlling the amount of lead in fuel)
- Cleanup, restoration, and mitigation of already emitted pollution
The management model must be specifically applied to the selected city. Provide at least one strategy for each category above. Existing strategies being implemented by the municipality may be used, but ensure they are discussed with proper research and analysis.
Evaluate each proposed strategy with a deep analysis of its strengths and limitations. If the municipality is already using a proposed strategy, analyze how well it is working or identify its shortcomings.
Example: When SOx and NOx concentrations are too high, a strategy to reduce emissions is to stop school buses from transiting the city until air quality improves, transitioning to online schooling temporarily. This would definitively lower emissions but could negatively impact youths' mental and intellectual health. Approximate how many school activities would be impacted, how many buses would stop transiting, etc., to support the argument.
A Report
A public servant must have a report where the research and results are properly presented. The report will include research and data from parts 1 and 2 of the instructions, with proper citations. Don't forget to add a discussion of both the advantages and disadvantages of each proposed strategy.
Report guidelines:
- Introduction to the global environmental issue: Conceptual description of primary air pollutants, sources and formation of secondary pollutants.
- Description of emissions in your city specifically: Sources of emissions, concentrations of emissions, geographical conditions of the city and how they impact concentrations of pollutants.
- Air pollution management strategies already being implemented.
- Proposed Pollution Management Strategy.
