Interviews & Application of Steps in Making an Ethical Decision

You are a psychologist in private practice. You have an attractive male client. He is a professional banker. He is struggling with some simple depression related to work. You feel attracted to him but don't say anything. You've only seen him three times. When you are showing him out at the end of the last session, he tries to kiss you. You avoid the kiss but he says that since his need for counseling is completed, he would like to take you out on a date. You want to go out with him.

Part I: Utilizing the ethical decision-making process, course content, and reflection to inform practice (15% of Grade)

PURPOSE STATEMENT: The purposes of this assignment are for the student to:

  • Demonstrate the ability to summarize and synthesize information in a professionally written paper
  • Demonstrate the ability to utilize the Steps in Making Ethical Decisions based off of a case scenario
  • Critically evaluate the connection between course material and professional, ethical practice
  • Use personal reflection for self-regulation in order to effectively manage value conflicts in professional, ethical practice.

Instructions:

Utilizing the Steps In Making Ethical Decisions outlined in your text (pages 21 - 24), the student will demonstrate their ability to utilize the steps in helping resolve the assigned ethical dilemma.  Be sure to follow the detailed guidelines in the text.

  1. Identify the ethical dilemma
  2. Identify the potential issues involved (at least 3)
  3. Review the relevant ethics codes and summarize how they apply
  4. Identify the applicable laws, policies, regulations and how these laws and regulations may affect the decision-making process (be sure to use APA citations)
  5. Obtain consultation:
    1. Set-up a phone or in-person interview with a professional in your field and gain feedback on your current ideas to resolving the ethical dilemma, as well as elicit their opinion on how they might resolve the particular ethical concern
    2. Consult with at least three "colleagues" in your class to elicit feedback about your current plans to resolve the ethical dilemma, as well as how they might resolve the ethical concern
    3. Summarize the response from the professional and colleagues and explain how you utilized their feedback to inform ethical decision-making
  6. Identify possible and probable courses of action (at least 3)
  7. Identify the implications for each course of action for the client, the helper, and others related to the client
  8. Choose what appears to be the best course of action and justify the reason for choosing this course of action.

Reflect on the following - answering all 5 questions listed below:

  1. What value conflicts did the student struggle with in working through the assigned ethical dilemma?
  2. How do those value conflicts relate to what needs to be done professionally and ethically in the situation?
  3. What diversity issues, conflicting cultural values, biases, or assumptions were overcome in order to resolve the ethical concern?
  4. How did the research in Assignment I, as well as completing the Steps In Making Ethical Decisions in Assignment II, impact the student's personal values as related to the ethical dilemma?
  5. How confident is the student in the course of action chosen for resolving the ethical dilemma? What is needed in order for the student to become more confident in their ability to resolve ethical concerns?
