Instantaneous speed The instantaneous speed is the speed that something has at any instant of time. The speed measured by a radar gun is very close to instantaneous speed. The car speedometer is also very close to the instantaneous speed because the time interval is very small. If you leave your driveway, travel around the block in your car, and then return to your driveway, your instantaneous speed is close to what you are reading on your speedometer. Your average speed, however, is zero because the start and end points are the same so the total distance travelled is zero.
