Question
Civil Liberties are rights and freedoms guaranteed to individuals protected from government interference. It limits how much power the government has. Civil liberties are protected in the constitution and bill of rights in the U.S. There are five civil liberties guaranteed in the first amendment. Freedom of religion, speech, press, assembly, and petition. Every civil liberty is being challenged to this day. We have freedom of religion, but religion was taken out of schools. We have freedom of speech but must be careful in the things we say because they can be taken out of context, misunderstood as hate speech, or even as hurtful or bullying. There are distinct reasons why speech is not always protected. For example, some people may find the word homosexual offensive. Freedom of the press, but you must watch out for the things you post on social media or make sure the information you provide can be backed up with facts because if not, people will attack you in every way because they might have felt insulted. You also must be careful with how much information you do provide because the government is watching; being too truthful can come with severe consequences. We have the freedom to bear arms but when we find ourselves in situations where we must act in self-defense in our own homes, we still can face jail time, law enforcement abuses their power, and depending on which state we live in you can get a license to have a weapon and some you cannot so if you do have to protect yourself using self-defense, you still also have the possibility of having to explain yourself in a courtroom so that people can find validation in your actions and not imprison you.
People can be all for same-sex marriage, the LGTBQ community, Women's rights, and having the freedom to express themselves in any way whether it is through fashion, verbally, or on social media yet, when another person is insulted by the freedom you decide to express, they go to drastic measures to stop you. They find reasons why abortions should be illegal and immoral. They look down upon women's rights. Then you the women who seek to be equal to men and yet complain when they are held to those standards. Everything is controversial and hypocritical. They allow you to have freedom but take away the rights that allow you to have that freedom because it does not meet their expectations of what your freedom should look like or gives people too much power and they do not like it.
Lastly, For every action, there is a reaction and many consequences. It is important to learn the difference between civil liberties and civil rights because one protects our freedom as citizens and the other from discrimination such as racial, sexual, and employment. Civil liberties are protections against the government guaranteed by the constitution, legislation, and court. Civil liberties belong to everyone. However, in many instances, there are crossovers and confusion between the two. It is particularly important for people to learn the difference because nowadays, people, and especially the government, will find every nook, law, and excuse to justify taking away the rights that have been given to us either by creating a new law or looking for other motives and injustices. Particularly when it comes to the acts of law enforcement. These people are made to protect and serve and yet most take advantage of the power they have and instead of doing right in our community they make things worse, hurt people in traumatizing ways, and even commit murders and get away with it.
