Question

Early in your shift, you provided patient instruction on Incentive Spirometry for a patient, Mr. G., a newly diagnosed COPD patient, who is now anticipating discharge to home. You spent time explaining how to perform the procedure on his own. You spoke slowly and clearly because you realized he doesn't speak English fluently. You asked if he understood what you explained, and he nodded that he did. A few hours later you received a call from his nurse asking if you ever started his IS, because he seemed to be confused. On the way back to his room, his aide stops to tell you that Mr. G. didn't find the written instructions helpful because he reads very little Spanish and no English at all. She said he told her he didn't understand how to perform the IS but didn't want to tell you he didn't understand because you seemed so nice and he didn't want to hurt your feelings. How could you have handled the patient education better?
