Question: Everyone has a personal identity made up of various aspects and experiences. In this journal entry, you will spend time reflecting on diversity, your own identities, the experiences of historically minimized groups, and the concept of privilege. After you've reviewed Chapter 9, please respond to the following journal prompts:
Consider the four types of identity mentioned in the textbook: personal identity, role identity, social identity, and collective identity. Reflect on and write about a time when one of your identities was an important aspect of social interaction.
Reflect on diversity and inclusion, and how some groups have either been historically ignored or minimized in American civic life, education, and culture. Select a group (our textbook provides examples), and write about ways in which the people in this group have been ignored or minimized and how this might have an impact on their identities.
Everyone has a certain amount of privilege. Reflect on your various identities, assets, and attributes. In what ways do you have privilege?
Recognizing your own areas of privilege, what can you do to share that privilege with others who may be marginalized or excluded?
