The conversation between the three early childhood professionals in the media segment "In Support of Family Diversity" introduced some key topics related to culture and to the dynamic interactions between family cultures and culture in general. Review the media segment, listen to the spirited conversation between the three panelists, and then reflect specifically on the following:
• In what ways do the panelists define "culture"?
• What do they suggest is the nature of "power," and in what ways are power and culture related?
• What is "surface culture," and what are some limitations of knowing only "surface culture?"
• In what ways do the panelists define and discuss "family culture?"
• What are some of the consequences for children and families if they experience incongruence between their family culture and the dominant culture?
• What implications for early childhood professionals do the panelists suggest?
