Understanding bias is important for personal and professional growth. Bias is shaped by environment, experiences, and beliefs. Retargeting bias begins with self-reflection and awareness. This discussion explores how I recognize bias in myself, shift perspectives, understand others, and identify barriers that make it difficult to move beyond my own worldview. Retargeting Bias Awareness To retarget how I identify bias in others and in myself, I must first define the parameters of where bias originates. Bias is often shaped by environment, upbringing, culture, and lived experiences (Brookfield, 1998). For example, racial bias may be influenced by perceptions of appearance, speech, or background, while professional bias may exist between disciplines such as math and English educators. Retargeting requires intentional self-reflection and reflexivity, where I critically examine my own assumptions before evaluating others. Reflexivity emphasizes continuous self-awareness and helps reveal how my past and environment influence my thinking (Cunliffe, 2002). By shifting inward, through reflection, feedback, and exposure to diverse perspectives, I can become more aware of my biases and challenge them, rather than defaulting to learned patterns. Experience of Switching Perspectives Switching perspectives is both uncomfortable and enlightening. It requires me to step outside of my own viewpoint and intentionally consider how.
