Digital Forensics
Assessment Scenario
Task
This assessment is to be completed individually. In this assessment, you will write a report justifying the role of digital forensics in the context of organisations' ethical and legal responsibilities.
Assessment Description
In this assessment, you are required to critically analyse a significant cyber incident. Your task is to justify the role of digital forensics in the context of the organisation's ethical and legal responsibilities following the cyber incident. Through this assessment, you will demonstrate your advanced understanding of the importance of digital forensics in upholding ethical standards, ensuring compliance with legal obligations, and its significance in cyber incident investigations.
Case Study
XYZ Bank is a prominent financial institution that offers a wide range of banking and investment services. Recently, the bank experienced a targeted cyber-attack, resulting in a massive data breach. Sensitive customer information, financial records, and intellectual property were compromised, leading to reputational damage and financial losses. There are suspicions that a group of sophisticated hackers orchestrated the attack with malicious intent.
Learning outcome 1: Justify the role of digital forensics in the context of organisations' ethical and legal responsibilities.
Assessment Instructions
Students must conduct research externally and included references in order to produce a well referenced assessment. You should use at least ten (10) sources of information and reference these in accordance with the Kaplan Harvard Referencing Style. These may include websites, social media sites, industry reports, census data, journal articles, and newspaper articles. These references should be presented as in-text citations and a referencing list at the end of your assessment (not included in the word limit). Wikipedia and other ‘popular' sites are not to be used.
You must submit your report in Word document or in PDF format.
The report should be well-structured and organised. The report should include the following:
Advanced Digital Forensics Overview: Provide an in-depth explanation of advanced digital forensics methodologies, tools, and techniques used in investigating complex cyber incidents like the data breach at XYZ Bank. Highlight how advanced digital forensics goes beyond traditional methods to handle modern cyber threats effectively.
Ethical and Legal Considerations: Analyse the complex ethical dilemmas and legal challenges organisations face when conducting digital forensics investigations. Justify the importance of adhering to ethical principles and compliance with relevant laws and regulations in the context of XYZ Bank's cyber incident response.
Digital Evidence and Chain of Custody: Critically evaluate the procedures and best practices for collecting, preserving, and presenting digital evidence in a forensically sound manner. Justify the significance of maintaining an unbroken chain of custody to ensure the integrity and admissibility of evidence in legal proceedings.
Incident Response Planning and Preparedness: Assess the importance of a robust incident response plan tailored to address cyber incidents. Justify the need for XYZ Bank to integrate digital forensics into its incident response planning to facilitate swift and effective response and recovery.
Insider Threat Mitigation Strategies: Critically evaluate insider threat mitigation strategies that XYZ Bank should adopt to prevent and detect potential insider involvement in cyber attacks. Justify the role of digital forensics in identifying and addressing insider threats.
The report should be properly referenced using appropriate academic sources.
Provide examples and illustrations to support your analysis.
