For many of us, reintroducing captive populations (or at least parts of them) into the wild is the ultimate goal. The stuff dreams are made of. But then again, if you are in this class you probably don't represent the average person. In fact, surveys have shown that the average American spends less than 5 hours a week in nature and most spend 3 times that amount watching TV. Not surprisingly, this disconnect has led to overall dwindling of public support for wildlife. Other than sounding like a grumpy old man, what am I getting at? Well, an important part of reintroductions is getting the public on board.
If you don't believe me, check out these two examples of snake reintroductions, one that didn't go so well (Timber rattlesnake) and one that has been a rather surprising success because early on they put a lot of effort into public outreach (Indigo snake). And yes, people get wildly opposed to reintroduction efforts of cute fuzzy things too.
