Overview

Imagine you have been hired as a contract designer to create a custom snowboard or skate board and associated apparel for a board company such as Burton etc. As a part of your freelance contract you have been asked to research and create a theme with interesting motifs. The theme must include a colour scheme, patterns, textures and graphics. As well, it must include illustrative and/or photographic elements. NOTE: Please do not use the "Burton" or another board manufacturing company logo as a part of your design.

Obey copyright! Choose your theme wisely. Avoid creating a theme with motifs that will require you to illegally use copyrighted material. You are your own best resource. Where possible, create your own artwork and take your own photographs. If required, you may purchase or use free stock images useful for your design. However, a purchased or free stock image should not represent an absolutely essential element of your concept.

Requirements

Assign the various elements of your theme and it's motifs to the design and layout of the following items of a marketing campaign:

1. A snowboard design, front to back, derivative of your theme and motifs - OR - A skate board design, bottom deck and wheels / wheel rims.

2. A logotype / word-mark for the name of your board derivative of the theme and motifs

3. A ski-jacket or hoody with designs, graphics, illustrative and photographic elements derivative of the theme and motifs (you may also choose to design t-shirts, toques, buttons, stickers, patches, etc.)

4. A 970 x 440 (72 ppi) static banner ad. The ad should be designed to sell your theme and motif styled boards and apparel in much the same way a magazine ad works.

5. As an essential element of your project you will be expected to create and publish a single page scrolling promotional micro Web site. Focus on designing the above elements first. Implementation of the microsite site's design will be utilizing skills learned in your Web Design 2 and Interactive Design & Animation class.

Completed Design Elements (15%): The completed design elements and ad is due by the end of class on week 12. Place the finished design elements and ad, properly named, in a zipped folder named “YourName Project 03” and hand in to the dropbox on DC Connect called Project 03 Submission. Production Check 2 (Website comp / working site draft): During class during the week 13 there is a mandatory production check where you are expected to show and get verbal feedback for the design of the draft single page website. Published Microsite (10%): The published microsite is due by the end of class the week 14). Submit a text file, to the dropbox on DC Connect called Project 03 Promotional Website Submission, with a link to the published site, on the web server. If a username and password is required to view the site - also include this information. If I can’t see it, I can’t mark it!

Hand-in This Project totals 30% of your term mark. 5% for the Benchmark Production Check, 15% for the completed designed elements and 10% for your published microsite. Production Check 1 (preproduction/initial ideas): During class the week of March week 10 there is a mandatory production check where you are expected to get approval of your chosen theme and preproduction docs. Benchmark (5%): The benchmark for this project is due during class the week of March week 11. While in class I will sit with each student individually to mentor and give advise. You will receive a mark towards the preproduction docs, type / colour scheme and motif, production of the project assets and rough layout of your ad.
