Discussion: Overall, the results suggest that high frequencies of EHE in collaboration with high frequencies of fire alarms (VIIRS data) had a significant relationship with the amount of forest burned. This result reflects the research of Brando et al. (2014) who also found that extreme drought events have caused more severe fire-induced forest loss in the Amazon. A possible explanation for this is that high frequencies of EHE increase the amount and abundance of possible fuels available to fires (drier leaves, twigs, and branches) (Nepstad et al., 2001). Therefore, when the fires burn, they became more intense and as a result, the tree cover loss increases. This important finding may help stakeholders to adapt and mitigate for more severe impacts of EHE on the ecosystem in the case of wildfires.

However, based on the trend of EHE frequencies, VIIRS frequencies, and the number of forest burned as shown in Figure 1, these mitigation and adaptation actions have not been able to provide positive results when exceptionally frequent EHEs and wildfires occur, as happened in Indonesia in 2015 and 2019, and in Australia in 2019. Therefore, a more holistic approach should be implemented to include all stakeholders in actions to reduce risks of forest fire from human-induced activities, improve forest area resilience, maintain early warning systems, and integrate related regulations for land use management.
