Professional Reflection

What are your ideas about the identification or labelling of children with various conditions? When is it harmful and when is it helpful? What role can you play in this process?

While Barkley (2004) directed his comments to parents. These 14 guiding principles can be helpful to all professionals dealing with children who have ADHD:

1. Provide your children with immediate feedback and consequences. Give children quick rewards and positive feedback when they are acting appropriately, and immediate consequences when they are acting inappropriately.

2. Give your child more frequent feedback. Consequences and feedback need to occur immediately and often.

3. Use more significant consequences: These children need more significant consequences and rewards than average.

4. Use incentives before punishment. Aim to reward positive behaviour rather than punish negative behaviour.

5. Externalize time and bridge time when necessary:?When a child is required to complete a task within an assigned period of time, provide a timer to give the child a way to keep track of the time during the task. For larger projects, bridge the time by dividing larger tasks into smaller ones that need to be completed each day until the task is finished.

6. Externalize the important information at the point of performance. Barkley (2005) called the point of performance as the location where work has to be completed. Make a list of visual reminders and post them in relevant locations for the child.

7. Externalize the source of motivation at the point of performance: Provide an external reward at the point of performance in order to increase motivation to complete the task. For example, at the last page of a detailed assignment plan, attach a coupon for something the child likes (e.g., a movie), which can be used when the assignment is completed.

8. Make thinking and problem solving more physical. Encourage the child to brainstorm and write out all possible options on paper prior to choosing a solution. This encourages the child to explore many options instead of the first suggestion made. If possible, let the child move around or have movement breaks when problem solving.

9. Strive for consistency: Remain consistent in parenting strategies. Aim for all caregivers of the child to apply the same strategies.

10. Act on consequences-do not simply talk about them. Reasoning and debates are ineffective parenting strategies; following through with consequences means our words and actions count.

11. Plan ahead for problem situations: Anticipate situations where your child may have more struggles, and determine what may be helpful. For example, make expectations clear, help your child anticipate obstacles, and brainstorm possible solutions ahead of time.

12. Keep a disability perspective: Barkley (2005) suggested you remind yourself that your children are doing their best, and sometimes it is our unrealistic expectations which are behind our frustrations.

13. Do not personalize your child's problems due to the disorder: Keep calm with realistic expectations and a sense of humour.

14. Practice forgiveness: Let go of resentments, and be ready to forgive your child and yourself.
