Imagining a Sustainable Future
In the short film A Message From the Future With Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez narrated by the congresswoman and illustrated by Molly Crabapple, and the article With a Green New Deal, Here's What the World Could Look Like for the Next Generation by Kate Aronoff, a possible future is imagined where American society mobilized to put initiatives and policies in place to combat the climate crisis and address growing economic inequality. Using these examples as a template, write a 2-part final:
-Begin by writing a letter from the future (2+ pages). You can write this from a number of perspectives: As your future self, as a younger family member, or as an entirely made up person. Describe the kind of world that has been created and the life you (or your chosen person) have been able to lead.
-In the second half (2+ pages), discuss a specific policy idea from the Green New Deal Resolution that you would support. Describe how you would benefit from the policy, and how society as a whole would be impacted. For instance, you could talk about tuition-free college, universal healthcare, universal childcare, a federal jobs program, or transitioning to 100% renewable energy.
Format: times new roman/ 12pt font/ 4 - 5 pages/ double spaced
GRADING CRITERIA:
o Displays a deep engagement with the course materials connected to prompt.
o Clearly addresses the question(s) in the prompt.
o Integrates quotations effectively: this means we are not simply including quotes and letting them speak for themselves! Ask yourself why the quote is important? How does it connect to your thesis and main arguments? How does it support your thesis and main
arguments? Does the quote need further explanation? Is it clear why the quote was
used? The sources are in the description up top.
o Arguments support your thesis and are structured in a clear and coherent way.
o Essay has been proof read! Excessive errors in grammar and syntax tell me you have not proof read your essay! While grammar and syntax are important for clarity, what matters most is that I can follow your train of thought and understand your argument(s).
