This week for the application you are to imagine yourself an immigrant from a developing country who is living in the targeted area about which we have been writing. You, as that immigrant, are going to be writing a letter to the editor to give your opinion about this project. This assignment is very much like your Week Three application assignment, only this time you are writing from the perspective of an immigrant who is fairly new to this U.S. city. Our theme for week four is Globalization and Cities. Here is an excerpt from the introduction: "Perhaps you don't give a second thought to your ability to access the internet. With a few keystrokes, you can look for jobs online, educate yourself about current events, and even acquire higher education. Meanwhile, a person in another city in the world has no running water, no electricity, no car, and little prospects for finding work. Your quality of life might improve if your internet connection would speed up, or if you could accomplish more tasks from your phone. Your fellow world citizen's quality of life could be improved by having an economy to plug into in the first place, not to mention access to clean water." So, in a nutshell, we are talking about relative terms - an area that we see as 'blighted' through American eyes, may seem like a paradise for someone coming from an underdeveloped country. Their idea fo a 'vibrant'comunity may be about the people who reside within the same area, eat the same food and talk the same language. It may not be as important to them that the housing is worn down or the transportation is not up to our standards. I think the readings for this assignment, which are listed in the weekly schedule, will help you think more about how an immigrant might perceive and respond to the scenario we have been talking about through foreign eyes..
