Assignment: (short film) details
Group assignment or individual assignment: Short film about impacts of global change on human health
Global warming
Only mention the impacts of global warming on human health.
This assignment may be completed individually or as a group of no more than 4 people. Whilst this assessment was originally designed to be a group task, the onset of COVID-19 has limited opportunities for student interaction, and as a consequence, students now have the choice of working individually or together.
Assessment will be slightly different for group and individual submissions, in terms of the size of the submission, and in the requirement for group submission scores to be moderated by peer review (each member of the group assessing the contribution of fellow group members).
The challenge will be for you to consider what messages you wish to impart, and to design a sequence of imagery and speech that conveys that effectively.
You will be assessed on:
• Accuracy and technical validity of your messages
• Logical and meaningful sequences of information
• Story-telling ability
• Assessment will be weighted towards the substance of what you are saying and showing, rather than the quality of sound and imagery (this is to allow for a range of skills and equipment).
The task: Create a short film that illustrates an impact of one aspect of global change on several aspects of human health.
1) Firstly, choose a global change factor. This could one from the list below, or something not listed. If you choose a factor that's not listed below, please seek guidance from the course coordinator to confirm your choice.
Global Change factors
Global warming
Sea-level rise
Deforestation/land clearing
Population increase
Agriculture
Mining and mineral exploration
Species extinction
Declining food-security
Conflict
2) Plan how you will create you film or video log. Options include:
• a. Shooting with readily available technology (e.g. your smartphone or personal computer or tablet). You are not required to purchase additional resources to do this task. You can use movie software already installed on your phone or computer. Alternatively, you can shoot it all in one take. Apple systems have iMovie. If you have an android phone, see this website for free movie editing software options
• b. Using powerpoint, adding a voice narration over a recorded presentation, and saving as a movie. This is perfectly acceptable, and has been used very successfully in the past.
3) Shoot/create your film. If you are working by yourself, create a movie between 3-4 min in length. If you are in a group, it should be 8-10 min long.
4) Submit your movie. A file sharing site will be created for submissions. The due date is listed in the course outline.
