Manufacturing Technology and Materials Assignment -

The Case Study - Case Study involves students taking apart a familiar product and determining the materials used for each separate component. An example could be a Belt Electric Sander. Students can undertake various tests to determine the materials that it is made from. In their reports the students can critically appraise the choice of materials selected and suggest alternatives. The students could analyze the design and possible methods of manufacture of each component. This activity illustrates to the student the integrative role that materials plays in engineering design and manufacture.

Learning Outcomes: At the end of the assignment the students will:

  • Be able to formulate manufacturing procedures from raw material specification to end products, including design modification procedure.
  • Be able to demonstrate an understanding of correlation between material properties and manufacture process with aid of material microstructure concept.
  • Have developed information gathering skills.
  • Have improved their written communication skills.

Assignment Brief - The use of the term "belt sander" is just an example of a potential product that could be analyzed.

The 'belt sander' consists of a number of materials and components produced by a range of manufacturing processes. Thus, students can investigate and identify the materials used in the belt sander.

Why have these particular materials been chosen? Discuss what alternatives could be employed - why?

What properties do they possess/need?

How have the component parts been manufactured? Why has that process been used? What alternative processes could be used?

What are the effects of the process used and the materials on the environment? Is the product recyclable?

The materials will be about doors. Make sure to choose only doors as student said, second attachment which has all details about the three types of door, follow the format screenshot closely. Need correct solution. Instructions - Explain your notations and steps explicitly and clearly. Marking scheme will consider not only correctness of your answers but also the clarity of your explanations. References should be cited clearly and it will be considered in the marking scheme. The complexity of the project is the key factor in the evaluation. Belt sander is an example and the student can select any other equipment or components. The cost analysis should be included in the report. The student should present their work at the end (report weight is 70 % and the presentation is 30 %).
