Instruction
Watch the films Ordinary People and What's Eating Gilbert Grape. You must watch both films so that you can intelligently respond to your classmates in the discussion. For your discussion post, however, choose just one film to assess the family portrayed. Use your selection to answer the questions in the callout box below.
Please note: There is no violence, sex, nudity, or dancing in these films, however there is some brief kissing as well as the implication of intimacy in What's Eating Gilbert Grape.
Based on your analysis of the film you have chosen, demonstrate your understanding of family systems.
• Identify the film you are reporting on. You do not need to retell the story since everyone will watch both films.
• What are the main issues to address if you were working with this family?
• Who might be the identified client? What brought the family in for counseling?

o Discuss the elements of resilience and strengths in this family.
• If you were to use either Structural or Multigenerational family systems theory from this module, which one would you use?
• Using the language of the theory, how does this theory help you understand what is going on in this family? What kind of interventions and skills are used with this theory? What is the role of the worker?
• What was most challenging about applying these concepts to the family in the film you chose?
After posting your response with analysis, respond to two posts from your classmates. Both of your responses should be to someone who analyzed the other film. Highlight what you have learned from your classmate's analysis of the film you did not report on. You may also discuss things that you might have seen in the film that your classmate interpreted differently.
