Homework: Psychology
Part I: Classical Conditioning Experiment
Goal:
To design your own classical conditioning study.
Instructions:
For this homework you will need to use the principles of classical conditioning to either train yourself, someone else, or a pet. You will need to do multiple "trials" to evoke a conditioned response so make sure to give yourself plenty of time.
A. Identify the person/animal you will be performing classical conditioning on.
B. Identify the unconditioned stimulus
C. Identify the unconditioned response (think of this as a reflexive response)
D. Identify the conditioned response you are trying to evoke
E. Identify the conditioned stimulus (note- this is the neutral stimulus that then becomes the conditioned stimulus with enough trials)
F. Describe your classical conditioning experiment. What types of things did you do to evoke a conditioned response to the conditioned stimulus? Was your experiment successful? Why or why not?
Part II: Operant conditioning "Experiment'
Goal:
To apply operant conditioning to your own life.
Instructions:
This discussion is lengthy, please take your time and perform at least 6 trials of operant conditioning. This does not mean you need to modify your behavior over 6 days, just that you need 6 times to reinforce the behavior.
A. Select a behavior: What is a specific behavior that you would like to modify through operant conditioning? This behavior should be measurable and observable. You can modify your own behavior or someone else's but please get consent to modify the behavior of someone else. You can also do this with an animal.
B. Identify reinforcers: What types of reinforcers (positive or negative) will you use to strengthen the desired behavior? Consider both primary and secondary reinforcers.
C. Select a schedule of reinforcement: Choose a reinforcement schedule (e.g., continuous, fixed ratio, variable interval) that you believe will be most effective for your task. Justify your choice based on operant conditioning principles.
D. What steps will you take to implement the operant conditioning task? Include details such as the timing of reinforcement delivery, how you will record data, and any potential challenges you may encounter.
E. Execute the operant conditioning task: Implement the plan you developed. Record data on the frequency and intensity of the behavior before, during, and after the conditioning process.
F. Reflect on your experience designing and performing the operant conditioning task. What did you learn about the principles of operant conditioning through this hands-on activity? What challenges did you encounter, and how did you address them?
G. Discuss ethical considerations: Consider the ethical implications of using operant conditioning techniques on human behavior. How can these principles be applied responsibly in real-life settings?
H. Review a peers operant conditioning process. What did you find interesting about their conditioning experience?
