CASE STUDY - CERVICAL CANCER
A.G. is a 45 yea-old divorced mother of four children ranging in age from 16-23. She was married at age 18 and had several sexual partners prior to marriage. She has had three sexual partners since her marriage ended. Last year she was treated with cryosurgery for venereal warts. The pap smeartaken 2 weeks ago showed atypical cells, and she has come in for repeat test. The pap smear reveals squamous cell carcinoma of the cervix. Laparoscopyshows the disease to be widespread in the pelvic cavity.
Assessment Data - Vitals: Bp 130/80, P 72, R 18, T 99.2 (37.3C). A.G. weight 142, approximately 15% over her ideal body weight. Examination of the cervix reveals a large necrotic lesion at the 7 o'clock position. She complains of back pain radiating down her back for several months and a foul vaginal discharge that increases after intercourse.
A CT scan and lymphangiographyare orders. Radiation therapy to pelvic region 5 times/week for 6 weeks. Pain medication ;Percocet 2 tabs po every 4 hours prn for pain and Xanax 5 mg po prn qhs for increase anxiety.
During a home visit, Ms. A.G. tells the nurse that she has been tired since beginning radiation treatments and that all she can do is sit in her chair.

He also has a history of Intravenous drug use for 6 months. In addition, he has unprotected sex with prostitutes. He required hospitalizations 3 times over the course of 3 months for medical management of encephalopathy and ascites, including large-volume paracentesis. He was treated with spironolactone, furosemide, prophylactic ciprofloxacin, lactulose, folic acid, thiamine, and multivitamin. He was noncompliant with medications between hospitalizations. He then stopped alcohol for 10 months and improved his medical compliance. He was able to increase his albumin and decrease his international normalized ratio (INR) to the normal ranges, increase healthy eating and regain weight, and resolve the edema and ascites. Six months after his last hospitalization, he was able to discontinue all diuretics and lactulose.
