Question: Meeting With a Counseling Professional - Preparation
The following details are provided to help you complete your assignment in this unit (Arranging a Meeting With a Counseling Professional). While you have until Unit 9 to complete the meeting and write a summary, your assignment in this unit requires you to verify that you have scheduled the meeting date and time.
For this activity, you will schedule a meeting with a counseling professional to discuss the role of the professional counselor and to support your development in the field. Here are the details:
Master's Degree Program Learners
• Master's degree program learners in the MFCT, or MHC, or SC specialization: Please connect with your faculty advisor in your FAF section to schedule your first Academic Learner Review (ALR) meeting. In Unit 9, you will submit a summary of your meeting with your faculty advisor.
Use the following guidelines to structure the meeting with your faculty advisor:
1. Get acquainted.
• Introduce yourself to your faculty advisor. Provide a brief personal and professional history.
• Ask your faculty advisor about his or her experience as a professional counselor.
2. Keys to success.
• Discuss the knowledge, skills, and abilities that are essential for success both as a graduate learner and as a counseling professional.
• Identify major milestones in the counseling program (for example, residency and fieldwork), and steps to support preparation early in the program.
• Be prepared to discuss three academic or professional goals for the next 12 months.
Please note:
• Master's degree program learners enrolled in this course starting in February, March, May, June, August, September, November, or December, be aware that your FAF faculty advisor may not respond to your e-mails or schedule interviews during the last few weeks of this quarter (March, June, September, or December) due to the break between academic quarters.
• Master's degree program learners starting in February, May, August, or November should arrange for their FAF faculty advisor interview to occur by no later than Unit 5 to prevent delays associated with the break.
• Master's degree program learners starting in March, June, September, or December should contact their FAF faculty advisor by the end of this week to arrange for an interview during the first week of the next quarter.
Certificate Program, Pre-Counseling Psychology, and Non-Degree Learners
If you are currently enrolled in a certificate program, the Pre-Counseling Psychology program, or are a non-degree learner, you will interview a practicing counseling professional. Certificate learners, please choose a professional counselor to interview who works in the same field as the counseling certificate specialization in which you are currently enrolled. The professional needs to have a minimum of a master's degree in counseling and a current clinical license (for example, LPC, LPCC, LMHC, LMFT). Please note non-counseling professional fields are not acceptable for this assignment (for example, social work, psychology, psychiatry). Suggestions for locating a professional include Web sites that allow you to search by license, licensure boards, and state counseling organizations. Review the fourth study in Unit 1 (Faculty Advisors and Counseling Practitioners) for more specifics.
Use the following guidelines to structure the meeting with your interviewee:
Use the following questions to structure your interview. E-mail these questions to your selected counseling professional along with a request to conduct a telephone interview over the next few weeks. You should complete your interview by Unit 8. Your Meeting With a Counseling Professional - Reflection assignment is due in Unit 9.
Specifically, you should cover these topics and areas during the interview by asking the following questions:
• What are your professional credentials, when did you receive these, and what was the process like for you?
• How would you describe your professional counseling approach?
• What is the most rewarding aspect of being a counseling professional for you?
• What have you found to be the most challenging aspect of being a counseling professional?
• What are some specific ways in which you build connections and relationships in the counseling field?
