Problem
As an early childhood educator working with various preschoolers, applying IDEA disability categories is vital to identifying and supporting children who may need special education services. Intellectual disability, speech or language impairments, emotional instability, and autism are among IDEA's categories. Understanding these categories helps me identify issues early and provide support.
Treasure, a kid with communication and social issues, is one example. She is quieter than her classmates and struggles to express herself. She occasionally has trouble talking to others and uses nonverbal cues instead of words. I might presume a speech or language disability.
I would start by working with Treasure's parents and other specialists, such as a speech therapist, to observe her speaking habits in different circumstances and note any patterns that could help pinpoint her issues.
