Question: Identify four principal factors to criminality with brief explanation and background. It should be supported by a theory/ies of crime causation. The factors should be from your observation and opinion. The example is attached below for your reference
Case Study: EXAMPLE - FACTORS:
1. COMPLICATED FAMILY SET-UP. Bundy lived in the Philadelphia home of his maternal grandparents, Samuel and Eleanor Cowell, who raised him as their son to avoid the social stigma that accompanied birth outside of wedlock. Family, friends, and even young Ted were told that his grandparents were his parents and that his mother was his older sister. He eventually discovered the truth, although his recollections of the circumstances varied. He told a girlfriend that a cousin showed him a copy of his birth certificate after calling him a "bastard." Bundy also expressed a lifelong resentment toward his mother for never talking to him about his real father, and for leaving him to discover his true parentage for himself.
SUPPORTING THEORIES:
*Social control theory -Hirschi proposes that exploiting the process of socialization and social learning builds self-control and reduces the inclination to indulge in behavior recognized as antisocial. Since Ted's family set-up is complicated, one of the social bonds identified by Hirschi as attachment has been weakened which allows Ted to freely express anima-like nature. This is also evident with his confession that he has resentment with his mother.
* Psychoanalytic theory- it emphasized the importance of loving relationships and attachment between children and their parents. These theories suggested that there were three major personality mechanisms: the id, ego, and superego. Children would only develop a strong ego if they had a loving relationship with their parents. The ego-ideal contained internalized representations of parental standards, and its formation depended on children having loving relationships with their parents. Due to the family history of Ted towards his estranged parents, his criminal offending is likely because of a weak ego or a weak superego, both of which followed largely from low attachment between children and parents.
