Your Task
Identify a significant, real-world business problem within a chosen industry domain and conduct a rigorous literature and industry review.
Assessment Description
An individual literature and industry review in a report of 1000 words.
Students are required to demonstrate their ability to integrate industry context, existing research, data availability, and methodological choice into a coherent foundation for a capstone project.
The report must identify and justify a meaningful business question within a selected industry and examine how an appropriate analytics method can be applied to address it.
The proposed business question should identify a specific business issue that can be investigated through research and appropriate data sources and advanced analytics methodologies and demonstrate originality, business relevance, and analytical depth.

Assessment Instructions
In 1000 words (excluding references), identify a significant business problem within a chosen industry that can be addressed through data analytics and conduct a rigorous literature and industry review. Your review should inform your capstone project (Assessment 2 and 3) by linking the industry context, existing research, available data, and suitable analytical approaches. When planning your investigation, you may find it helpful to review marketing research concepts and quantitative research techniques relevant to business analytics.
How to prepare
Choose one industry (for example, healthcare, retail, education, finance, recreation, or government).
Identify a business problem: Identify a significant business problem currently facing your selected industry. Using data analytics, explain why this problem is important, relevant, and suitable for investigation.
Your problem should:
be complex, with multiple related factors (not a simple issue)
be challenging, with no clear or obvious solution
require analysis and decision-making, not just description
be based on a real or realistic industry situation where possible
allow you to explore different solution pathways and approaches
Conduct a literature review: Analyse academic and industry literature related to your selected problem.
Evaluate:
how the problem has been studied
key insights and findings
data and analytics methods used. Focus only on your selected problem.
Evaluate data sources and analytical approaches: Identify and evaluate:
the types of data available in your chosen industry
the data source(s) you can access
suitable analytics techniques (e.g., descriptive, predictive)
In your report, briefly justify / discuss why your chosen methods are appropriate. You may also refer to operation research methodologies when evaluating suitable analytical techniques.
Define a business question: Write one clear and original business question based on your selected business problem.
Your question should:
clearly focus on the problem you identified
be addressable by using data analytics
allow you to develop and justify a solution approach
require your own decisions and design choices
In your report, briefly outline:
the data source(s) you will use
the methodologies you will explore
how your idea is unique with regard to existing research
at least three relevant visualisations that justify its value in addressing your business question. If you use an image dataset, provide an example screenshot or description for each image class.
References: Provide at least ten relevant, credible and current (published within the last five years) references to support your discussion.
