Assignment Tasks
You are required to run a project titled ‘Solutions@Majan' in the college. This will require you to plan and implement the project and subsequently write a report on the same. You also be required to engage in a number of activities related to project planning and implementation.
In order to execute this project, you are required to:
1. Choose an industry of your choice (tourism, retail, road or sea transport, logistics, airlines, finance, banking, insurance, automotive, entertainment, healthcare, hospitality).
2. Identify a problem area related to the Industry. Using design thinking approach propose a solution to the problem. The solution can be in the form of products, services, processes or technologies.
3. Apply key operation decisions to the project either at the problem or solution stage. Operation decisions may include supply chain, inventory, capacity, risk, quality, layout design, and location. (You can choose any two or three that are most relevant to your project).
4. Analyse and evaluate the steps used in new product/ process design (applicable to solutions)
5. Summarize the project details using an activity table and network diagram. If applicable identify the critical path.
6. Showcase the project through a one day ‘Solutions@Majan' fair within the campus.
Assignment Guidelines
1. You are required to choose an industry of your choice. For working students, you can choose your own industry.
2. Once you have chosen the industry you have to identify a relevant problem related to the industry. This can be a problem at an individual, organizational or social level. If required, you can talk to the people in the industry to help you identify or refine a problem.
2.1 Once the group agrees on the problem you are going to work on, the next step will be to discuss in your group, what can be a solution to the problem. The probable solution to the problem can be in the form of a product or service or process.
2. 2 You have to clearly state in your assignment what was the new product development process, your group followed (refer to class presentation slides).
2.3/4. You have to also illustrate whether the proposed product or service went through feasibility test using different evaluation screens. It should culminate into a prototype.
3. Next you are required to apply at least 3 operations management decisions to the proposed new product. The following operation decisions can be used:
• Supply chain management
• Quality Management
• Capacity Management
• Process Design
• Product Design (you have already used above)
• Inventory Management
• Location
When you apply these decision, you have to discuss how these operations decisions impact or have influenced you proposed product.
For example, what supply chain decisions or quality decisions are applicable to your product. How will you select the suppliers? What selection criteria will be used. Where will manufacturing take place? What quality standards will be applied? How quality will be assessed?
How will the inventory be managed? How will the service or manufacturing processes be designed?
4. Next, you will have to demonstrate that you have worked as a group on this project. You have to apply project Management tools such as network diagram and identify the critical path. It will set a timeline and you can follow the timeline. A screencast for creating a ND is also
available on MOVE. The network diagram should be designed for new product development processes, hence there is a link to the section
above.
5. These tools will help you to plan the project well until the day when you will demonstrate your porotype to a large audience.
