Comparing Two Unlike Products with Similar Therapeutic Effect: Hibiscus Vs An ACE-I (Angiotensin Converting Enzyme Inhibitor) Drug
You've diagnosed your patient, Mr. Martinez, with hypertension and diabetes. His form of hypertension is defined as blood pressure readings with a systolic pressure above 120 to 149 mm Hg or a diastolic pressure over 80-90 mm Hg for a diabetic patient. In all patients without diabetes, readings greater than or equal to 130/90 mm Hg are considered stage I hypertension. Mr. Martinez qualifies at Stage II Hypertension. Your patient has asked if you happen to offer any therapies for high blood pressure that are prescribed as well as a natural supplement. As luck would have it, you heard of a study on an agent that promotes heart health called hibiscus but do not know if it is appropriate for this patient.
1. Perform a literature search on hibiscus, seeking data on the effectiveness of hibiscus vs placebo or an ACE-I drug (lisinopril is most prescribed).
2. Compare this to the new guidelines from the American Heart Association (AHA)/American College of Cardiology (ACC) established lower treatment cutoffs for hypertension, as of November 2018, for first line treatment of Stage II Hypertension, in terms of side effect profile and efficacy.
3. Write your recommendations to the patient for treating their hypertension with hibiscus or lisinopril.
