Assessment: Mini-Research Project
Overview
The Mini-Research Project allows you to apply your research blueprint from Assessment 1 in practice, using secondary data to generate meaningful insights and evidence-based business recommendations. You will work in your original group to investigate a defined business problem, critically engage with relevant literature, analyse secondary data, and translate your findings into actionable recommendations.
You are not required to collect primary data. However, you must demonstrate how you would design an appropriate primary-data study to further investigate the research problem.
The project should demonstrate a clear and coherent evidence-to-decision process:
Business problem → Research objectives → Literature and research gap → Methodology → Data analysis → Findings → Discussion → Business implications → Recommendations
Your report should demonstrate that these elements are logically aligned and mutually reinforcing.
Tips for Success
Clearly define and refine the business problem and ensure that all research objectives directly address it.
Use 15-20 high-quality academic and industry sources but avoid simply summarising them. Critically synthesise the literature around key themes, debates, theories and research gaps.
Ensure that your literature review directly informs your research objectives and methodology.
Use tables and visualisations to present secondary data clearly and efficiently.
Move beyond describing data. Explain what patterns mean, why they may exist, and why they matter to the business.
Link findings explicitly to the literature. Identify where your findings support, extend or contradict previous research.
Distinguish clearly between Findings (what the data shows) and Discussion (what the findings mean).
Critically justify your methodological choices and discuss alternative approaches, validity, reliability and limitations.
Demonstrate a well-developed design for primary data collection, even though primary data will not actually be collected.
Ensure that recommendations are specific, feasible, actionable, evidence-based and directly derived from your findings.
Explain how limitations may affect the validity, reliability or generalisability of your findings.
Consider ethical issues associated with both secondary-data analysis and the proposed primary research.
Document each team member's contributions in the Appendix.
Purpose
This assessment tests your ability to translate research planning into practice and demonstrate how research evidence can support real business decisions.
The project should demonstrate critical understanding of relevant research and theory, appropriate and justified research methodology, systematic analysis of secondary data, critical interpretation of findings, integration of findings with existing literature, identification of meaningful business implications, development of actionable evidence-based recommendations, and critical awareness of methodological, ethical and practical limitations.
Report Structure
Introduction
Refine and clearly establish the research problem.
The introduction should provide relevant business context, clearly define the specific business problem, explain why the problem matters, establish the purpose of the research, present clear research objectives, and establish the scope of the investigation. Research objectives should be sufficiently specific that each objective can subsequently be addressed through the data analysis and findings.
The introduction should establish the foundation for the rest of the report rather than provide an extensive description of the organisation or industry.
Literature Review
Critically synthesise 15-20 high-quality academic and relevant industry sources.
The literature review should identify major themes and concepts, discuss relevant theories and frameworks, compare and contrast findings across sources, identify areas of agreement and disagreement, evaluate the strengths and limitations of existing research, identify relevant debates and inconsistencies, establish a clear research gap, and demonstrate how the research addresses that gap.
Avoid presenting the literature as a series of unrelated source summaries.
The review should instead demonstrate synthesis by considering what the literature collectively suggests, where it disagrees, why findings might differ, what remains insufficiently understood, and how this informs the current research.
The literature should also be revisited in the Discussion to interpret the study's findings.
Methodology
Explain and critically justify the methodology used to analyse the secondary data.
The methodology should explain the research design and approach, secondary-data sources, rationale for selecting the data sources, data selection and sampling criteria, variables or measures examined, analytical techniques, reliability and validity considerations, ethical considerations, and methodological limitations.
Proposed Primary Data Design
Although primary data is not required to be collected, demonstrate how an appropriate primary research study would be designed.
The proposed design should explain the target population, sampling strategy, proposed sample size and justification, proposed data-collection method, survey, interview or other research instrument design, key variables or constructs to be measured, recruitment approach, proposed analytical techniques, ethical considerations, potential sources of bias, and strategies for improving validity and reliability.
Where appropriate, critically evaluate alternative methodological approaches and explain why the selected approach would be preferable.
For example, do not simply state that an online survey is appropriate. Discuss its advantages, limitations, potential sampling bias and implications for generalisability.
Data Analysis & Findings
Analyse the secondary data systematically using appropriate quantitative research techniques.
The section should explain how the data was analysed, present relevant descriptive and/or inferential analysis where appropriate, use tables, charts and figures effectively, identify significant patterns, trends, relationships or differences, interpret results rather than merely describe them, and relate findings to the research objectives.
Each major finding should answer the question:
What does this result tell us about the research problem?
Avoid including visualisations or statistics that do not contribute to answering the research objectives. Where appropriate, distinguish between:
Finding: What the data shows.
Interpretation: What the finding may mean.
More detailed theoretical interpretation and business implications should be developed in the Discussion.
Discussion
Critically interpret the findings and connect them to the literature.
The Discussion should explain the meaning and significance of the key findings, compare findings with previous research, identify where findings support, contradict or extend the literature, provide possible explanations for unexpected findings, revisit the research gap, address the research objectives, identify implications for the business, and demonstrate independent judgement and original insight.
A strong discussion should move beyond:
"The results are consistent with Smith (2023)."
Instead, explain why the results are consistent or inconsistent, what this means in the context of the current research, and why the difference matters to the organisation.
The Discussion should establish a clear connection between:
Limitations & Ethics
Critically evaluate the limitations of the research.
Consider limitations relating to secondary-data availability, data quality, sampling, measurement, representativeness, missing variables, time period, potential bias, inability to establish causality, generalisability, and methodological constraints.
Do not simply list limitations. For each important limitation, explain:
Discuss ethical issues relevant to both the secondary-data analysis and the proposed primary research design.
Potential issues include privacy and confidentiality, informed consent, anonymity, data security, responsible use of secondary data, potential participant harm, transparency, and responsible interpretation and reporting.
Recommendations
Develop actionable, feasible and evidence-based recommendations that directly respond to the findings.
Each recommendation should address a specific finding or research insight, explain the proposed action, demonstrate strategic relevance, be feasible for the organisation, identify expected benefits, identify implementation priorities where appropriate, and include measurable outcomes or KPIs where appropriate.
Recommendations should not introduce unsupported ideas that were not identified through the research.
Prioritise recommendations where appropriate, particularly when resources or implementation capacity are limited.
Appendix
The Appendix should include the team member contribution statement, relevant supporting tables or analysis, the proposed primary research instrument or sample questions where appropriate, and additional methodological information where useful. The Appendix should support the report rather than contain essential arguments that should appear in the main body.
