Case: Diego, a 64-year-old Hispanic male with metastatic pancreatic cancer, was transferred from the intensive care unit to the medical floor for end-of-life inpatient hospice care within 24 hours of his recent hospitalization. Since his diagnosis five months ago, he has been in and out of the hospital due to complications and uncontrolled pain. Diego lives with his wife, Maria, who works from 7 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Due to his poor prognosis, his wife and attending doctor transitioned him to inpatient hospice. Maria arrived in the unit at 8:30 pm after work to be with Diego; she requested that a priest visit and pray for her husband that night. Primary nurse Tina was unsure how to contact the chaplain since after-hours are between 8:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m. Tina asked her charge nurse, Blake, for help but was uncertain how to contact the chaplain since the hospital's house supervisor handles the after-hour requests. House supervisor Sandra had a difficult time contacting the chaplain on call, but she made multiple phone calls and did her best to get a chaplain to see the patient that night to honor the wife's request. The chaplain arrived and anointed the patient at 1:00 a.m. At 2:00 a.m., the patient expired. Maria was thankful that a priest could see Diego that night and could pray for her husband before he passed away.
