Discussion Prompt 1 - Robert Louis Stevenson and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
Choose ONE of the following topics and respond with the usual non-Wikipedia full paragraph, using your OWN words whenever possible and placing in QUOTES when you are taking words from a source.
Robert Louis Stevenson: Do a bit of research and report back on his birth, his upbringing, education, travels, and his most famous works. (Did it turn out that you do know Stevenson after all?)
Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde: This work, like Frankenstein, is so famous that you are likely to have come across references to "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" without actually ever having read the Stevenson novel yourself. What was your previous understanding about what the work is about and what the major themes are? AND how is the actual novel similar to or different from what you expected it to be like?
Discussion Prompt 2 - Narrative Perspective in Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
How would you identify and describe the narrative perspective/point-of-view in Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde? Is this first-person? Third-person? If third-person, is it "limited" or "omniscient"? How can you tell? Whose movements do we mostly follow? WHY might the narrative perspective be important to understand in this work? WHAT is the effect of having this kind of narration? HOW does it impact a reader's understanding and relation to the central characters in the novella?
(Yes, this topic might stay mostly silent for the first part of our discussions. But you SHOULD be able to figure out narrative point-of-view early on, and it would be interesting to see what you make of this choice, especially once you get to the end of this short work...)
