Case: After creating your Tiktok video, please take some time to explain the rhetorical choices you made in the content, design and delivery of your video. As you know, the main objective of Mason's first-year composition course is to learn rhetorical flexibility, which means that whenever you are engaging in an act of communication (written, oral, visual, multimedia), you always think about the relationship between audience, exigence, purpose, audience and genre. Writing and communication acts and products do not occur or exist in a vacuum; they are always responding to an exigence, catering to an audience, pursuing a clear purpose, and following (or knowingly disrupting) the conventions/features of the genre that is most appropriate for the audience and task.. As you advance into your upper-division courses and then into your professions, your rhetorical awareness and flexibility are key skills that will help you to succeed.
Your Task: Write a 500-750 word essay that describes and analyzes the rhetorical choices you made for your Tiktok video. This video isn't emerging out of nowhere. Rather, it is a remix of your White Paper, which was written for a totally different rhetorical situation. Your job in this final assignment is to explain how you "remixed" or "repurposed" your White Paper for the different audience and genre of a Tiktok video. To write this essay, respond to the following questions in essay form:
1. Overview:
a. First, describe the audience, exigence, purpose, and new offering of your White Paper.
2. Rhetorical analysis of TikTok video:
a. Explain the target audience you chose for your Tiktok video. We all know that Tiktok videos are designed for a "public" audience, but within that huge audience, what target population did you have in mind as you were developing your video content? Provide a thoughtful and detailed explanation of why chose that target audience.
b. How would you describe the difference in the exigence (the problem) you responded to in the video versus the White Paper? Why are these exigences different?
c. How did your purpose change to meet this new exigence and audience?
d. What was your new offering to the committee you selected for the White Paper and how did your new offering differ for this Tiktok audience? Why do you think what you present in your Tiktok video is a new offering for your chosen audience? How do you know?
e. How did your choices about content differ between the two genres? In the Tiktok video, did you decide to take a whole new angle? If so, why? Did you decide to focus on one driving question? If so, why that one in particular?
3. Genre analysis:
a. What are some of the typical features of the Tiktok video genre (length, content, style, tone, visuals, language, etc?)
b. What stylistic choices did you make? Describe why you made those choices about length, style, tone, visuals, language, and how you think the choices you made are appropriate to your target audience?
c. How do these genre and stylistic choices differ from the ones you made in the White Paper? Why are they so different?
4. Lessons learned:
a. How did creating your TikTok video help you better understand the topic you've been exploring all semester?
b. What did you learn about yourself as a writer/content creator through writing the White Paper and Tiktok video.
c. How do you think this remix experience strengthened your skills as a writer/communicator?
