Prompt: Recent research indicates that Parkinson disease damages the sympathetic division of the peripheral nervous system. One test for sympathetic division function requires the patient to blow against resistance. This is known as the Valsalva maneuver. A functional nervous system will compensate for the decrease in blood output from the heart by constricting blood vessels.

Questions:

1. How would a Parkinson patient respond to the Valsalva maneuver?

2. How does this relate to a common condition in Parkinson patients called orthostatic hypotension, in which blood pressure falls suddenly when the person stands up, leading to dizziness and fainting?
