THE STRATEGY FOR EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION
Preparing Strategic communication includes the following preparatory steps (1 to 5).
1. Analyze the strategic situation and context.
2.define the ends
3.determine the means
4. Formulate the ways
5. Assess.
Strategic Conversations
There are key principles for strategic conversations among leaders (Salacuse, 2006):
- Clearly state, define, and stay focused on your goal or interests.
- Appeal to and shape the interests of the other person, as identified during preparation for the conversation.
- Frame the issue in a way they can understand.
- Seek mutual agreement on the goal of the conversation or negotiation.
- Bargain. Is there a way to give and take to meet mutual goals? (Remember that this involves listening!)
- Mobilize social pressure by third parties or the web of?relationships.
- Anticipate the possible actions of the other person.?"look ahead and work back"
- Generate options together through dialogue (again, really listen to the other views).
- Evaluate options using a fair process.
- Decide and gain commitment for the decision.
Negotiation
William Ury (1991) has written thoughtfully about "nego-tiating your way from confrontation to cooperation," and having real dialogue is a key part of this (Isaacs, 1999).
- Preparing.
- Identifying the Interests of both sides is the next step in negotiation.
- Identifying Suitable Options is the third step
- Establish Standards.
- Identify Alternatives.
