Case Study: Essay Complete the following essay as homework and submit in class on the day of the exam. Imagine that while conducting your "Environmental Testing" lab, you and your lab partners described one new species of bacteria and two new species of fungi. The cell morphology (microscopic view) of the bacterium is Gram negative bacilli occurring in short chains of 3-5 cells. The colony morphology (macroscopic view) is dull, khaki-colored, translucent colonies which exhibit a flat profile which sinks slightly in the center. The cell morphology for one of the fungi is filamentous with radiating spores arranged in fours and the colony morphology shows large powdery gray colonies with rust-colored spores at the center which disperse into the air with the slightest breath. The other fungus has a cell morphology of single-celled ovals with large nuclei and a colony morphology described as forming medium, tan, glossy, irregularly shaped colonies that smell of bread with a slight licorice odor. Since you are the discoverers, you get to name these three new species according to the rules of taxonomy. ? What will you name them? [3 @ 1 point each]
Questions:
How will the names identify them specifically?
Since the two fungi look different microscopically and macroscopically, would they be in the same or different genera?
o What would be your justification for this determination?
o How about the bacteria; could it be the same genus as the two fungi?
Which Domain would the bacteria be in?
Which Domain would include the fungi?
