How did these two parts of the country each function and how did they get along before the Civil War? Why did they end up going to war?

2. Thomas Cole and the Hudson River painters put their focus on Nature. Edoard Manet and the early Impressionists put theirs on a bustling city life. Using an example from the American painters and one from the early Impressionist painters, explain what each was trying to say in their work. How is their subject matter different? How is their technique different?

3. Europeans interacted very differently with China and Japan. Compare Chinese/European interactions with Japanese/European interactions between the years of 1800 and 1870.

4. In many ways, the Abolitionists who fought slavery in America and the revolutionaries in Europe in 1848 shared many common causes. How were their struggles the same? How were they different?
