Part One:

  • Explore and understand the updated Canada's Food Guide (pay attention to how it differs from the previous one)
  • Identify the categories and provide examples from each
  • Identify bias by determining who is responsible for the Food Guide
  • Research two other countries' food guides. Note differences, similarities, and anything else you finds interesting

Part Two:

Evaluate the foods: which was offered at York University based on the recommendations in Canada's Food Guide.

  • For two days, observe and record (write down) the food offerings at York University at the following times:
  • Snacks were apple, banana, and Summer Fresh Snack & Go Hummus & Flatbread between periods 1 and 2 (breakfast)
  • Voucher lunch (lunch) was Cheese penne with green beans
  • Lunch meals sold in the cafeteria (pretend dinner) were chocolate cookies, Bread puddings, chicken nuggets, and french fries.
  • Use the following questions to evaluate if this would be a healthy diet for someone:
  • Based on Canada's Food Guide, is this a healthy diet?
  • What, if anything, should be changed?
  • Share the findings of your evaluation and suggested changes by referring to the Food Guide.
