Point 1: A company purchased a building for $210,000 with a service life of 10 years. The residual value is $10,000. For the first four years, the company records depreciation expense using the straight line method ($20,000 depreciation per year) bringing the book value to $130,000 at the beginning of year five. At the beginning of year five, the company switches is depreciation method to sum-of-years method and estimates that the building now has a total service life of 12 years (8 years remaining).
