Small project
In today's market, there is a range of affordable to high-end and low-end computers that are loaded with a variety of specs. The purpose of this assignment is to measure the performance of a computer of your choice (your PC, Laptop, Raspberry Pi, etc. for those who would like to use Raspberry PI you can check out one from the library if you don't own one) using diagnostic tests to measure different performance metrics of the processor/computer. The performance depends on the hardware architecture of each device (CPU, Memory, I/O), the type of the program being executed, and compilers.
Part 1. Using the formula discussed in the class, explain how the performance is affected by the CPU architecture, the type of the program being executed and the compilers? What pitfalls and fallacies might you encounter in measuring the performance? Use section 1.8 of the book.
Part 2. Review benchmark testing and determine different types of testing that can be executed, and what the results mean.
Part 3. Review the following benchmarks that exist in the market and compare them based on whether they are open source, the programming language used, the compiler used, and the type of testing they support.
Part 4. The rest of the assignment will be based on using https://openbenchmarking.org/. This benchmark uses a tool called Phoronix Test Suite.
a. Install the tool on the computer of your choice (your laptop, raspberry PI, etc.):
i. Click Download ->
ii. Select the appropriate distribution ->
iii. Extract Folder
iv. Open Windows Powershell
v. Change directory. Type command "cd [paste directory here]"
i.e. cd
i. Type command "start phoronix-test-suite.bat"
ii. Follow prompts to install Cygwin and agree to EULA
iii. Type command "start phoronix-test-suite shell"
iv. For user-friendly interface, type interactive and press enter. Follow prompts to select desired tests
b. Check the specs of the computer your evaluating:
i. Type interactive, press enter
ii. Type 4, press enter
iii. Record device specifications
c. Testing the comprehensive CPU test. This will take a couple of hours to run.
i. Choose option "Run A Suite (Option 2 by default)
ii. Choose option labeled "CPU" (Option 8 by default)
iii. Let run... as each test completes you will be prompted to save results, CHOOSE YES
iv. Results should be found in your C drive in the phoronix test suite folder
d. Evaluate the computer using the chess test:
i. Choose "Run a Suite"
ii. Choose Chess option (option 2)
iii. Run, and save results as tests complete
iv. Results in the same folder as part c
e. Evaluate the computer using the networking test. This will evaluate the I/O of your computer used to communicate:
i. Run a Suite
ii. Network (option 33)
iii. Run and save
iv. C:/phoronix test suite
f. Go to stackoverflow and pull the code for the pi calculator. Modify your program to be able to calculate the time and print it. You will need get the current clock at the start of the program and then at the stop of the program and calculate the duration. Screen shot your output into your report.
g. Represent the results of your tests in a table of a graph
h. Analyze your results and write your own conclusions.
