Narrowing the topic is one of the first great challenges of the dissertation process. Leggett and Jackowski (2012) offer a back to basics approach for the research scholar. The authors suggest posing basic questions to identify the topic. Further, Leggett and Jackowski propose an interesting process called "looping" which helps the scholar narrow down his topic (see my reply to DQ2: Leggett and Jackowski, 2012). Engaging in such exercises may help you come to a clearer understanding of what your topic of interest should be. After the topic is identified, the authors recommend identifying key words and phrases that are seminal to the topic for locating related literature. I am finding this basic approach helpful. The length and complexity of the process were generating confusion and lack of direction in my work. Returning to a simplified way of looking at the formulation of the question is helping me refocus and move forward step by step.

The DC Network forum is a very informative place to gain valuable information about questions you may have about the dissertation process. The topic I chose to analyze was under Dissertation Milestones. In this thread, students are interested to know if anyone had taken time off and was able to jump right back into the task of creating their prospectus in a short amount of time. I am not interested in taking time off yet the comments suggested that the student pay close attention to her 10 strategic points. As I get ready for my residency and RES 850 assignments, this thread reinforces the necessity to complete the 10 strategic point's assignment in detail and not jump forward disregarding the procedures outlined by Grand Canyon University. I plan to use the DC Network forum to create meaning of future assignments. In the forums that I identified, each reply was meaningful and professional which set the stage for a community of collaboration amongst all levels of participants. One of the most difficult processes in my journey has been to choose a dissertation topic that has not been previously researched. The DC Network forum will be a great place to collaborate about my topic of interest. According to a survey conducted on the DC Network, 75% of its participants indicated that the DC Network helped with their research and dissertation (Berger, 2014). This solidifies the necessity of its use.

Berger (2014) asserts that the dissertation process entails a lot of hard work and the dissertation is now required nearly everywhere in the world.

When reviewing the active forums, I selected the topic called, "Content Expert," because in week 2, our assignment is to identify a content expert to serve on the dissertation committee. As I prepare to complete the content expert assignment in Week 2, I will have a better understanding of what the selection process entails and have a better understanding of how the committee is knowledgeably populated. According to Berger (2014) the content expert is considered the subject matter expert that is focused in one specific area. The content expert is selected by the doctoral student and is added to the dissertation committee in the middle of the first dissertation class. The dissertation committee works collaboratively to advise and assist the learner in the completion of a dissertation. The doctoral committee is a three member team that consists of a chair, a methodologist and a content expert. The doctoral learner asked for advice on selecting a content expert. Some responses were to use the GCU spreadsheet, ask scholars about key topics and contact authors of articles already used. One of the things that was interesting is that one response suggested that if authors are contacted, they should also be
informed that GCU requires a service fee of $300.
