Instructions

In Robert Bates book Prosperity and Violence, Bates first constructs an argument, from historical evidence and data, about how early states formed and became peaceful and prosperous. He then turns, in ch. 4, to an account of how states formed after WWII pursued peace and prosperity, often with less successful results.

In this paper, answer the following question: Why have the strategies for peace and prosperity pursued by modern states, especially in Africa, been less successful than previous strategies, and what forces of globalization have contributed to this dynamic?

Your answer should cite and discuss Bates' book primarily--other sources can be cited, but your primary reference here should be Bates. 400-500 words is an appropriate length.
