Application: Bringing Theory to Life
You have examined a variety of theoretical models that explain how spheres of influence shape the learning and development of school-age children and adolescents, including the following:
• Bronfenbrenner's ecological model
• Barbour, Barbour, and Scully's model of home, child care, school, and community/media influences on children's knowledge and experiences
• Epstein's theory of overlapping spheres of influence
• Dunst's model of family empowerment
Choose one of these models and briefly describe its major components and/or underlying philosophy. Then, create a brief story or narrative about a school-age child or adolescent that includes specific examples of how each component of the chosen model influences his or her learning and development. You should include at least two specific examples for each component of the chosen model, and you may include graphics to accompany your narrative if desired. You may base the school-age child or adolescent profiled in your narrative on yourself as a child/adolescent, someone you know,* or it can be completely fictional if desired.
