Heating units are scattered throughout the original ME Building. Each unit has a throttling valve, a 48 inch long section of 1-inch id copper pipe with attached fins, a liquid trap, and a return line. See the photograph below. Low pressure (15 psig) steam results from that produced at the South Power plant and routed through underground tunnels before making its way to the throttling valve. When the valve opens the 15 psig steam fills the copper pipe. The valve then closes and the steam transfers energy to the fins, which in turn transfer it to the room air. The steam condenses as it cools, reaching a final temperature of 140 F. After condensation is complete a fresh charge of steam forces the original mass from the pipe and the process repeats itself. What is the temperature of the steam at the throttling valve inlet? Report your answer in F. What is the pressure inside the copper pipe when condensation has occurred? Report your answer in psig. How much energy is transferred from the steam during this process? Report your answer in Btu. What is the condensate volume? Report your answer in in3. How many steam charge cycles per minute are required for the heating unit to produce 50000 Btu/hr?
