Part 1. Start ArcMap. From the "Shapefiles" folder, add "Essex_Municipalities." Use the "symbology" tab found through the shapefile's properties to symbolize the municipalities by "Categories" so that they are differentiated by municipality type ("MUN_TYPE"). How many different types of municipalities exist within Essex County? Create a screen capture of this map.

Part 2. Create a duplicate layer of "Essex_Municipalities" in the Table of Contents. Rename the duplicate layer to "Essex Population 2000." Symbolize the "Essex Population 2000" layer with graduated symbols to show municipal populations during 2000. Create a new screen capture to show the Table of Contents and a map of both municipality types and populations.

Part 3. Interpret the map created in step 2 above in 1 or 2 sentences.

Part 4. Open a new map (without saving changes to the previous). Add "NJ_Counties" from the "Newark_Base_Layers" folder. Create a graduated color map of "2005Index" offenses. Change the "Color Ramp" to a color of your choosing. What happens to your map when you adjust the number of classes from, for example, 2 to 10? Discuss how this changes what the map communicates in 1 or 2 sentences.
